DEVELOPING LEGENDARY CITIES IN AFRICA

Why Megalopolis?

The Megalopolis professional networking social forum aims to boost the commercial success and sustainability of Southern African urban development initiatives.
It draws its participants from the property development and construction sectro, as well as biotechnology including scientists, developers, consultants, infrastructural investors, building materials manufacturers, suppliers, NGO’s, utility companies, building contractors and various levels of government.

Urban, city, and town planning is the integration of the disciplines of land use planning and transport planning, to explore a very wide range of aspects of the built and social environments of urbanized municipalities and communities

The site addresses issues such as energy consumption and saving, pollution of soil, water and air, the depletion of natural resources, electricity shortages, water shortages, transportation and the management of waste.

Megalopolis - Greek for large city, great city refers to an extensive metropolitan area or a long chain of continuous metropolitan areas.
Jean Gottmann coined this term and later used it as the title of his 1961 book about the northeastern seaboard of the United States.

Cities can change for the better

Over half of the world’s population lives in urban areas, consume 75% of all resources and create 75% of all waste. Cities are best placed to lead action to reduce our emissions. The way we plan, design and manage them provides solutions to adapting to a changing climate and mitigating any further changes.

It is Megalopolis' belief that a proactive response from cities can deliver much better places to live and work. This may entail the promotion of the use of specific design, materials and technology to reduce energy for cooling or heating and resource use, materials that optimise natural light and promote the circulation of air. The site focuses on materials that are non-poisonous and that can be reused; water-efficient fittings and collection; the use of renewable energy sources; and regard for the environment in delivering condusive human and natural environments.

The Megalopolis social media website will provide inspiration, thought leadership and support for strategic decision makers in cities. It will assist in the challenge of prioritising effective spatial policies and actions to deliver attractive, competitive cities in the light of a changing climate.

It will embrace the social, economic and environmental dimensions of creating sustainable cities.

Compiled by leading experts such as yourself, the site provides access to instant knowledge. It plugs into existing research and evidence, signposting further detail and information available elsewhere. It distinguishes fact from opinion and, vitally, explains evolving and unresolved issues.

The site will also help prioritise effective spatial policies and interventions across different scales: from the regional, through the city scale, down to the neighbourhood and building scales.

Recycling of mine buildings provide opportunities

Mining projects have a limited lifespan and when their minerals run out there are only limited options available to the mining companies.
1. Leave the mine in an abandoned or semi secured state in the hope that mineral prices rise to a level where the mine will again be profitable. This usually results in vandalism of the mine to the extent that it cannot be reopend.
2. Demolish the mine in terms of the mining chater and remove all evidence that it exitisted. Sell the cleared ground for farming… Continue

Energy and Environmental Design

Buildings make a fundamental impact people’s lives and the health of our planet. Buildings typically use one-third of our total energy, two-thirds of our electricity, one-eighth of our water, and transform land that provides valuable ecological resources.

As the green building sector concept takes hold, more and more building professionals, owners, and operators are seeing the benefits of green building.

Green design not only makes a positive impact on public health and the environment, it als… Continue

Capitals of Africa

On this page you will find the capital cities of Africa with figures of the city proper population. Have a look at the cities from space, for each city there is a zoomable satellite view. Additionally you will find links to the official or near official city site (if available). Almost all African states are developing countries with a less developed internet infrastructure, therefore there are less capitals of Africa online. The country links lead you to the respective country profile page. City proper is a locality with legally fixed boundaries and an administratively recognized urban status that is usually characterized by some form of local government.
